Specific Interests in Global Learning
I am interested in creating communities of educators working through the challenges of teaching and designing curricula for global learning. My current work is in high impact educational practices and student success, and I am interested in the potential for those efforts to integrate large global issues and topics.

Things that I have found interesting...

One of my interests is innovation in human habitats, whether to create more sustainable urban landscapes, mobile living spaces, or homes that create a sense of community or of belonging through a new approach to shelter. I came across this slideshow by a pair of Welsh artists creating structures built by and for the community according to a traditional Welsh concept of shared spaces.

Also look at this PSA created by the Japanese government about food security. People can be encouraged to live healthier and more sustainable lifestyles if they are addressed in a way that is clear, persuasive and engaging.

Ethics, Borderlands, Religious Perceptions, Framing Sustainability: A Rundown of Discussions

There are a number of exciting topics open for discussion in the "Groups" on this site.

In the Ethics of Global Citizenship group, Laurent Boetsch from Washington and Lee University has raised a question of… Continue

Critical reflective teaching and transforming knowledge

The task of teaching our students about justice and global interconnectedness is unavoidably connected to the question of whether our own institutions of higher education (and our own classrooms themselves) are guilty of perpetuating injustice. The curriculum is a powerful thing, and we must not forget that it was originally founded upon exclusion, in the context of a violent system of domination over women, slaves, and indigenous peoples.

"Mapping" as a transformative approach

A student with a nuanced global education learns to map multiple elements of global learning (intercultural competence, social responsibility, critical understanding of global questions, etc.) onto his or her already complex (though sometimes underexamined) identity. It seems only natural that, as educators, we practice the same reflective exercise on our own multifaceted institutions and courses.

Building a map forces critically reflective questions: Where am I coming from in this… Continue

Sex-selective abortion: a powerful issue for teaching ethics and health

In India, I came across the issue of sex-selective abortion as an example perfectly suited for a cross-disciplinary class trying to address a real global question. The topic is controversial, place-based, ethically urgent, culturally specific, and thoroughly interconnected… Continue

A dose of social justice and health

I want to share a resource for weaving in issues of health and social justice inside and outside the classroom.

THIS is public health.

The Public Health & Social Justice web portal includes open-source resources (slideshows, articles, references) and course syllabi from all disciplines. Examples of syllabi: "Death Made Visible – An Interdisciplinary Exploration of Death and Dying in Literature," "Film and Public Health," "Social Determinants of… Continue

Thanks, Caleb. Just wanted you to know that I'll be at the Integrative Learning conference in Atlanta with a Wheaton team in case there are any shared futures reunion activities. Our panel focuses on how Wheaton's curriculum with its focus on diversity, global ed. and multidisciplinary connections has inspired faculty research in new directions. We're just wrapping up a Mellon grant that supported 30 faculty research projects that grew out of the curriculum. See you in Atlanta!

I don't know of anyone. But, we could even get together informally. Maybe we could ask on this network.

Caleb,

Will you be at the Integrative Learning: Addressing the Complexities conference in October? If so, can we have some sort of session on global learning?

Margaret
